The Health Emergency Management Center, Peking University (PKUHEM) was established on April 20, 2010 as a comprehensive health management research institution that integrates research, teaching, training, and consulting. It leverages Peking University's strong research capabilities and abundant medical resources. The founding director of the center was Professor Hu Yonghua, and the first chairperson of the expert committee was Academician Wang Longde. The current director of the center is Professor Liu Min.
The mission of the center is to advance the theoretical research and practical application of health emergency management, fully utilizing the disciplinary and human resource advantages of Peking University and its Medical Department. The center actively seeks support and collaboration from domestic and international health administrative departments, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations. It aims to establish a platform for academic exchange, collaborative research, and talent cultivation in health emergency management, providing services to standardize China's health emergency management system and continuously improve the country’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
Since its establishment, the center’s personnel have undertaken more than 100 research projects, including National Natural Science Foundation Key Projects, National Key Research and Development Programs, and Major National Science and Technology Projects, as well as commissioned projects from the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Health Commission of China (NHC), the National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention, and the Beijing Public Health Emergency Management Center. The center has published over 400 research papers in international top-tier journals, including The Lancet, BMJ, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Lancet Global Health, and The Bulletin of the World Health Organization. Additionally, more than 40 academic monographs, textbooks, and popular science books have been published.
PKUHEM has received multiple prestigious awards, including: First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award, First Prize of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association Science and Technology Award, First Prize of the Public Safety Science and Technology Award, First Prize of the National Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award, National Science and Technology System’s Advanced Collective Award for Combating COVID-19, etc.. Entrusted by the Emergency Office of the National Health Commission (NHC), the center has organized the "Disaster Health Emergency Management Training Course". In collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Red Cross Society of China, and the World Health Organization (WHO), the center co-hosts the "Health Emergencies in Large Populations (HELP) Training Course", fostering outstanding professionals in the field of health emergency management.
Looking ahead, PKUHEM will continue to uphold its mission, drive innovation, and make bold advancements. The center is committed to contributing further to the Healthy China Initiative and ensuring national security.
